As part of Hong Kong’s commitment to decarbonization, HK Electric offers the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) Scheme, allowing businesses and individuals to sell electricity generated by their renewable energy power systems (REPS) at attractive rates. This initiative promotes the development of distributed renewable energy while providing financial incentives for solar and wind energy projects. Here’s a step-by-step guide to applying for the FiT Scheme with HK Electric.
Feed-in Tariff Rates
REPS Capacity (kW) FiT Rate (HK$ per unit)
≤10 $4
>10 - ≤200 $3
>200 - ≤1,000 $2.5
Step 1: Prepare and Submit Your Application
Before beginning your application, ensure you have all necessary documents prepared. You must complete and submit the FiT Scheme Application Form, along with the following:
• A copy of your HKID Card, Passport, or Business Registration Certificate.
• A preliminary layout plan showing the REPS installation site and FiT meter location.
• A single-line electrical diagram and details of your renewable energy system.
• A signed consent form for electrical installation works (if applicable).
• Any additional documentation requested by HK Electric.
Applications can be submitted via email to RE@hkelectric.com. HK Electric will review your application and confirm your eligibility.
Step 2: Obtain HK Electric’s Consent and Install Your System
Once your application is reviewed, HK Electric will provide consent for the installation of your renewable energy system. Do not install the system before receiving approval.
After receiving consent, you can proceed with the installation. A Registered Electrical Contractor (REC) must be engaged to ensure compliance with safety and technical standards.
Step 3: Commissioning and Technical Documentation Submission
Following the installation, your system must undergo testing and commissioning. The responsible engineer must submit the following documents to RE@hkelectric.com:
• REPS Commissioning Report.
• As-built system information, including details on PV panels, inverters, and connection points.
HK Electric will review the submitted reports to confirm that your system complies with regulatory and safety requirements.
Step 4: Grid Connection and Onsite Inspection
After the commissioning reports are accepted, HK Electric will schedule an onsite inspection to verify the system’s safety and compliance.
If the inspection is successful, HK Electric will:
• Connect your REPS to the grid.
• Install a smart meter to measure energy output.
Once connected, your system can begin exporting electricity, and you will officially participate in the FiT Scheme.
Step 5: Receiving Feed-in Tariff Payments
FiT payments will be based on the metered output of your REPS. Payments can be made through the following methods:
• Crediting to your electricity account (offsetting your bill).
• Cheque payment issued to the electricity account holder.
• Bank transfer (available for customers with autopay and eBilling, where the bank account name matches the electricity account holder).
By participating in the FiT Scheme, businesses and individuals in Hong Kong can reduce energy costs, contribute to renewable energy development, and support the city’s sustainability goals.
